Embrace

Embrace - Jessica Shirvington Violet Eden has a seventeenth birthday coming up, and she’s so NOT looking forward to it. It’s not just her birthday after all – it’s also the anniversary of her mother’s death. She’s hoping to let it pass unnoticed, but her father made plans. At least Lincoln will be there – her absolutely yummilicious training partner, whom she’s been crushing on for ages and ages. When he kisses her, she thinks this is the BEST birthday ever. Then he walks away. And Violet’s world changes. Not (just) because Lincoln kissed her. But what she learns after. There are Grigori – part angels and part human. They work in pairs, and hunt the Exiles – fallen angels who wreak havoc on Earth. Lincoln’s Grigori, and apparently Violet is, too. He’s been training her to get her ready, for the day she makes her choice to join them. Free will and all that. But as his partner-in-justice, not his better half. But Violet doesn’t want to hunt Exiles, especially since Phoenix is one – and he hasn’t lied to her. Yet. Not like Lincoln has, anyway. What’s a newly-minted seventeen-year-old to do?Embrace has all the elements of popular YA paranormal fiction: a love triangle, supernatural beings, good vs. evil with heaps of gray, and a conflicted heroine. The bad: Oh, the drama. The good: Violet’s nowhere near as angsty as Bella, the shades of gray bring nuance into and otherwise cut-and-dried world, and the ending isn’t quite what you would expect.drey’s rating: Pick it up and take it for a spin ’round the block.
