If you’ve read Fallen, you’ll know that it ends with raiders riding away with Emma’s daughter Beth. And if you’ve read Fallen, you’ll know that Emma isn’t going to let her go so easily – not after all she’s gone through to get back to Beth…After arguing with her husband Haywood, and some friends, Emma heads off into the frozen wilderness. Alone. It’s an almost impossible task: she has to survive the cold trek on foot, until she can steal a horse – an offense punishable by death – and then ride until she finds the bandit camp. If she makes it that far, she then has to figure out how to rescue her daughter and get them both safely back home. She expects it to be difficult. What she doesn’t expect is to meet up with old friends along the way. She’s lucky she does – they save her life. And then, despite her protestations, they decide to help Emma with her mission… Which is a good thing, because old friends aren’t the only characters she runs into here!I liked Cold Light. Emma is still a strong, strong woman. She still has to make difficult decisions, still has to do what’s right for her, still has to live her life as well as she can. I wish she wouldn’t go back-and-forth so much on Arthur – I know she loves him, I know she misses him, and I know she wishes she were free to be with him. But she’s married, and she’s determined to keep her family together. I probably sound harsh. But that’s me – make a decision, and stick to it already…The story flows well, even with a few slow patches as Emma’s mulling about Arthur. I would’ve liked to know more about some of the new characters, including Kangee and the big cat following Emma around. There’s still a lot more to wrap up in this trilogy, and I hope Traci Slatton gives us all the answers when we get to book 3. Which means that yes, I’ll be looking forward to the conclusion. drey’s rating: Pick it up!
