When Will There Be Good News? is my second Jackson Brodie novel, the first being Case Histories, which I read last year. I still haven’t made it to One Good Turn, but now I have to, to fill in the Jackson-Brodie-backstory. Not that I had much time to wonder about it, as this one grabs you right from the beginning with a triple murder. That was then. Now, thirty years later, Jackson is on a train headed in the wrong direction when an accident leaves him battered and bruised in the hospital, with a wanted man’s identity and no memory of how he came to be there. As his memory returns, he’s pressed by a teenager to look into her missing employer, Dr. Joanna Hunter. Only problem is, the doctor’s husband insists she’s off visiting an aunt. Actually, that’s not the only problem — the other comes in the form of Detective Chief Inspector Louise Monroe, a might-have-been from Jackson’s past, who’s searching for her own missing person. Two cases, three people to find, one detective, one private investigator, and a teenager who just can’t seem to catch a break. Kate Atkinson’s When Will There be Good News? is gripping and haunting. Definitely add to your reading pile if you like a well-told mystery.drey’s rating: Excellent!
